New Zealand - Work Permit

SKILLED MIGRANT WORKER

To get a New Zealand work permit (also called a work visa), you generally need a job offer from an accredited employer, proof of your identity, health, and good character, and sufficient funds for your stay. Popular options include the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), which requires a job check, and the Working Holiday Scheme (WHS) for young people from specific countries.

Types of Worker Visa

  • Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV):
The most common pathway for foreign workers, requiring a job offer from an accredited employer who completes a job check.

  • Working Holiday Scheme (WHS):
For young people (18-30) from eligible countries, allowing them to work and travel for up to 12 months (or 23 months for UK citizens).

  • Post-Study Work Visa:
For those who have completed studies in New Zealand, allowing them to stay and work.

  • Green List Visas:
Specific work-to-residence and straight-to-residence visas for jobs on New Zealand’s Green List.

  • Seasonal Work Visas:
For specific industries like horticulture, helping to fill labor shortages.

How to Apply?

  • Find a Job: Secure a job offer from an accredited employer in New Zealand.

  • Employer Action: The employer will need to gain accreditation and conduct a job check to ensure there are no suitable New Zealanders available for the role.

  • Apply Online: Create a government account and apply for the visa online through the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) website.

  • Submit Documents: Upload all required supporting documents, including identity, health, and character proof.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for a work visa, you typically need to meet the following criteria:

  • Health: You must meet health requirements and may need a health examination.

  • Character: You will need to provide police certificates to prove good character.

  • Financial Resources: You must demonstrate that you have enough money to support yourself in New Zealand.

  • Job Offer: For most work visas, a job offer from an accredited employer is required.

There are a range of visas you can apply for to work in New Zealand. Some work visas require you to have a job offer at the application stage, and to only work in certain jobs. With other visas, you do not need a job offer and can work for almost any employer. What you can do on your visa will be specified in your visa conditions.
