Germany - Study Permit

STUDY VISA

To get a Germany study visa, non-EU/EEA students must first gain admission to a German higher education institution, then complete an online application on the India.diplo.de portal, attend a VFS Global appointment for biometrics, and finally travel to Germany to convert their initial visa into a long-term residence permit within three months. Key requirements include proof of sufficient funds (typically €11,904 per year in a blocked account), a valid passport, health insurance, academic transcripts, and proof of language proficiency.

The visa for the purpose of studying is also valid for preparatory programmes. These include language courses, if required for admission to a degree programme, as well as attendance at a preparatory college or a comparable institution and completion of a compulsory internship.

You generally need a visa for entry, which you can apply for online using the Consular Services Portal or you can go to your local German mission.

Tips to Success

It can sometimes take months for a visa to be issued, so it’s important to apply early on. Please note: A tourist visa cannot be converted to a student visa later on.
